Going from Great TO GREEN

Everyday Green is working on LEED Homes, ENERGY STAR, Indoor airPLUS and NAHB’s National Green Building Standard certifications throughout Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC and Pennsylvania. We’re helping homeowners, architects and contractors learn green building best practices for more energy efficient, water efficient homes with improved comfort, indoor air quality and lasting durability.

Project Info: When the homeowners of this Baltimore County, MD new home learned about their local LEED Homes property tax incentives, they decided to go for Platinum and make their home as energy efficient as possible while also pursuing Indoor airPLUS. They have both solar and geothermal, minimized glazing, and an array of green materials. See detailed images of the project from conception through completion.

Project Info: A lucky homeowner can still purchase this home striving for both LEED and Indoor airPLUS certification that will be complete in Spring 2010. This home’s superior insulation includes both sprayfoam and exterior rigid insulation. Coupled with a geothermal system, utility bills will be 50% less than a typical code built home. It was built with a precut framing package saving lumber waste.

Project Info: This Falls Church City home is impeccably designed inside and out. Food gardens will take the place of grass, extensive daylighting minimizes electricity use, and super efficient windows and sprayfoam insulation dramatically reduce the heating and cooling load. Project Info: Howeowner and architect Todd Ray is building his dream home from an existing home in Arlington, VA. He’s salvaging as much from the existing site as possible and adding his own modern flair. The new home is designed to optimize daylighting and will have geothermal, spray foam, an efficient hot water layout and will meet the Indoor airPLUS requirements. Owner: Brendan and Wendy Owens
Project Info: The Owens’ home in historic Old Town Alexandria is a gut rehab preserving much of the existing rowhouse while not sacrificing energy efficiency and comfort. Bio-based spray foam insulates the existing structure with SIPs construction in a small addition. Radiant flooring, efficient HVAC equipment and a small footprint could make this the greenest home on the block; if their neighbors don’t beat them to it.

Project Info: Next door neighbors of the Owens, the Spencer’s will be featured on Planet Green’s Renovation Nation showcasing their superior insulation and 10″ SIPS panels, high efficiency windows and super low flow water fixtures. They are using a mini-split heat pump for a ductless HVAC system to minimize heating and cooling losses.

Project Info: This 1940’s Colonial Revival house is in the midst of a complete gut-rehabilitation. Rather than demolish the home and send it to the landfill, the project team and owners are renovating the old and adding an addition. They are carefully saving the existing landscaping and beautiful old trees, and updating the home with sprayfoam insulation and geothermal. View more pictures on the Barnes Vanze website.

Project Info: SEED builders is working to introduce a new type of home to the McLean, VA marketplace - one that will be charming on the outside, cozy on the inside and energy-efficient all around.
